Guidelines for Choosing a Phone

Coverage

Iridium and Inmarsat phones can be operated worldwide, the latter with the exception of the pole regions. The Thuraya network is limited roughly to Europe, Africa (except very southern countries), Asia and Australia. See the product page for a coverage map.

Quality of Speech

In our experience Inmarsat and Thuraya offer the best speech quality. This is in part due to the geostationary nature of their satellites which does not require constant rebooking and call transfer to a different satellite. Thuraya allows somewhat more freedom of movement during calls as within the coverage areas typically various satellites are in line of sight. In practice the difference with Inmarsat is not that big. It is best to stand still when on a call with any of the phones.

Costs

Here Inmarsat excels. It offers the lowest call costs (approx. 1.80 CHF per minute to any landline or mobile phone worldwide). As the leader in maritime communication they have the largest customer base allowing for the lowest rates. Iridium is comparatively expensive.

This feature is ready to use. Be aware though that we recommend to obtain a SAR Membership, which currently costs 39.95 USD for one year and covers the cost of search and rescue operations.
